A BRONZE INCENSE SHOVEL FROM THE HOLY LAND

This incense shovel is composed of a rectangular tray and horizontal handle embellished with repeating raised bands and terminating in a small, flat handle. Shovels like this one were used during time of the Second Temple to remove the ashes from the lamps of the Menorah. Following the destruction of the temple this ritual object became a potent symbol in Judaism and remains a source of remembrance to this day.
In very fine condition with natural patina present.
