Following the excessive taxes and other injustices, both political and religious, enacted upon the Jewish people by the Roman Empire and its representatives a revolt was led by a group known as the Zealots (Ka-na-im in Hebrew) in 66 CE. This revolt was initially successful in expelling the Romans from Jerusalem, setting up a government, and issuing autonomous coinage, of which this shekel is a part. Despite repeated attacks by the Romans and devastating losses the revolt officially held until 70 CE when the Romans breached the walls of Jerusalem and burned the Temple. This shekel is not only a physical manifestation of this important period in Jewish history it also speaks to the belief that the Zealots had in their rebellion and its longevity.
